ZAMI
ZAMI
ZAMI is a consciousness visualizing the dance of loving one’s identity, expressed popularly as a Carriacou term by Audre Lorde’s 1982 Biomythography, Zami: A New Spelling of My Name as “women who work together as lovers and friends.” Through the use of archival video, sound collage, and photographic images, this love quilt is a coming of age homage to the Black queer community, women, femmes, and lesbians inspired by the legacies of Audre Lorde and Ntogaze Shange. Dedicated to the beauty of community in building a strong foundation of self-discovery and expression.
The Black Archive is a gathering place for Black memory and imagination. Created to spotlight the cross-sectional Black experience through visual metaphors and historical exploration, ZAMI provides a perspective into the past, present, and future.
